Are you looking for ways to earn more money?

Retraining or obtaining new formal qualifications takes time, money and enthusiasm. A pay rise with your current employer might be off the table. So what other options are open to you?

Take a look at your existing skill set (this could be a hobby, tasks you already perform at work or something you have a natural talent for) and consider how to apply it in the following ways...

1. Teach

Could you coach, tutor or train? People learn in so many different ways and environments nowadays. You could explore one-on-one tutoring via video conference or by organising local group meet-ups.

Go one step further and look at how you might be able to scale your teaching venture by compiling and formatting your knowledge into an online course that you can sell.

2. Consult

Businesses often require specific expertise from time to time but can’t always afford to employ someone on a full-time basis. That’s where freelancers and consultants play an important role, particularly during a recession.

Build relationships with recruitment companies so that you’re front-of-mind when they need to fill a casual role. You can also approach companies directly about your services and experience, particularly if you’ve noticed an area where they could improve.

3. Sell

If your skill is in making or building something, consider how you could sell your work.

Check out relevant physical retail opportunities such as local markets and shops, but you’ll reach more people if you can sell online. There are many platforms to explore, from social media (Facebook Marketplace, Shopify, eBay etc), and local classifieds (Gumtree) to setting up your own website (SquareSpace, Wix are popular DIY options) and promoting on various channels.

4. Complete tasks

There are hundreds of tasks that people can’t do themselves or simply don’t have time to complete.

Register with sites like Airtasker and you can respond to all sorts of jobs including cleaning houses, writing blog posts, feeding pets, assembling furniture and much more.

This venture might start out as something to do in your spare time. But it’s also an opportunity to experiment with a new career and discover whether you can monetise your hobby or other interests.
