8 Secret Techniques to Improve How to Find Your Target Market

Writer's picture: Dream it. C it. Do it.Dream it. C it. Do it.

No matter what market you’re trying to reach, you must know who it is you’re going after to succeed. If your target market isn’t receptive to your message or offers, then your business will fail before it even has a chance to take off.

Use these eight secret techniques to improve how you find your target market and get the results you want from your marketing efforts.

1. Know yourself and your business

Knowing yourself is crucial for discovering who your target audience is. Figure out your strengths, weaknesses, personality type, skills and passions so that you can see what you're good at and what you want to do. This will help you narrow down who your potential customers are and how they might find you. It's a lot easier to sell something if you know it well.

2. Research

Creating a successful business model means knowing your target market. In order to know your target market, you need to know who they are, what they like and dislike, and how they spend their time. One way is by talking to friends and acquaintances from school, work or social circles. A quick email with questions about their business, like How did you get started? or What’s your day-to-day like? could yield some great insights about what kind of person would buy your product. Another idea is to take a look around online; make sure not to copy another company's website, logo design or anything else that could be considered trademark infringement!

3. Analyse your competition

The best way to find a target market is to analyse your competition. It will help you understand what your customers are looking for and it will help you understand how much money they're willing to spend. There are tons of ways to research other people in the same industry as you--and we recommend doing this before investing any time or money into a project! Some examples are reviewing their website, social media, collateral, events they attend and even purchasing their product or service.

4. Develop buyer personas

The first step in finding your target market is crafting a buyer persona. A buyer persona is a fictional character that represents the characteristics of your ideal customer. They are based on data and research about what motivates people, what they need and what their concerns are. Buyer personas can be as simple or complex as you want them to be, but they should include at least these four elements: name, age, location, and occupation. Once you have a good idea who your potential customers are, you can tailor your marketing messages so that they speak directly to them - which increases engagement with prospects and leads!

5. Use organic methods

So you've come up with a brilliant idea for your new business. Now it's time to get the word out. To find your target market and make them aware of what you have to offer, try these techniques first off:

  • Meeting people in person. This is an easy way to network with people who are likely to be interested in your product or service. And it gives them the opportunity to tell you about their needs that you might not have considered before.

  • Send your product or service to a potential target market and gauge the response.

  • Post a survey online.

  • Post on relevant forums.

6. Use social media

The most popular social media platforms for businesses are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. The first thing you should do is research your target market on each of these websites. If you're a small business, it's always a good idea to join groups related to your product or service on Facebook or LinkedIn. While doing this, keep in mind that different social media sites have different demographics so what may work well on one site may not work well on another.

7. Go where your target market hangs out

The best way to find your target market is by going where they hang out. This will allow you to see how they behave and what they want. You can then adjust your marketing techniques accordingly. For example, if you’re targeting pet owners, go to a pet store or animal shelter. Ask the employees what they think their customers are looking for and why. What should their customers be aware of? Why do people buy their products? What are the common problems customers come in with?

8. Ask for referrals

One of the best ways to find your target market is to ask for referrals. Let's say you're a dentist and want people interested in your services, you can ask past clients, friends, family members, or anyone else you know if they know anyone who would be interested.

You may know what products or services you want to offer, but if you don’t know who will buy them, you won’t be able to make money and keep the doors of your business open.
